1 min read

In April 2025, Slate Auto, a Michigan-based electric vehicle (EV) startup backed by Jeff Bezos, unveiled its first model: the Slate Truck. This compact, no-frills electric pickup is designed to disrupt the EV market by offering a highly affordable and customizable option for consumers.

🚚 What Is the Slate Truck?

The Slate Truck, also known as the “Blank Slate,” is a minimalist, two-seat electric pickup with a starting price of $25,000—making it the most affordable EV in the U.S. market. After federal tax incentives, the price could drop below $20,000. The base model includes a 52.7 kWh battery offering approximately 150 miles of range, with an optional 84.3 kWh battery extending the range to 240 miles.

🛠️ Customization and DIY Ethos

Slate Auto emphasizes user customization. The truck comes in a single gray color with basic features like manual windows and steel wheels. However, owners can personalize their vehicles with over 100 optional accessories, including power windows, vinyl wraps, and even a conversion kit to transform the pickup into a five-seat SUV. These accessories are designed for DIY installation, fostering a sense of ownership and personalization.

🏭 Production and Availability

Slate Auto plans to commence production in the Midwestern U.S. by late 2026. Preorders are currently open with a refundable $50 deposit. The company aims to serve both individual consumers and fleet customers, with potential applications for companies like Amazon.

💰 Bezos’ Involvement and Vision

Jeff Bezos has invested in Slate Auto through his family office, contributing to a $111 million Series A funding round. The startup, founded in 2022, operated in stealth mode until its recent unveiling. With a team comprising former employees from major automotive companies, Slate Auto aims to revolutionize the EV market by making electric vehicles more accessible and customizable.

🔧 A New Approach to EVs

Slate Auto’s approach challenges conventional automotive trends by focusing on simplicity, affordability, and user customization. By eliminating non-essential features and promoting DIY upgrades, the company seeks to empower consumers and redefine the EV ownership experience.
