Tivoli Gardens, the iconic amusement park with over 180 years of history, opened its gates on March 22, 2024, to welcome visitors to a magical summer season filled with thrilling rides, world-class performances, and exceptional culinary experiences. As Denmark’s most famous tourist attraction, Tivoli Gardens continues to captivate guests from around the globe with its unique blend of history, culture, and entertainment.
A Summer of Cultural Celebrations
Nestled in the heart of Copenhagen, Tivoli Gardens is Denmark’s largest tourist attraction, offering a wide array of experiences for visitors of all ages. The 2024 summer season, which runs until September 22, features the Tivoli Garden & Flower Festival from August 31 to September 15, and the Summer Classical festival, showcasing performances by some of the world’s most renowned musicians at the Tivoli Concert Hall.
This year marks the 180th anniversary of the Tivoli Youth Guard, the world’s oldest youth marching band. Tivoli Gardens will celebrate this milestone with a grand anniversary concert on September 1. Throughout the summer, visitors can enjoy the sight of these young musicians in their traditional red uniforms and bearskin hats as they parade through the park.
Celebrating Iconic Attractions
Tivoli Gardens is also celebrating major anniversaries for two of its most beloved attractions. The heritage Roller Coaster, one of the oldest wooden coasters still in operation, turns 110 years old this year. Meanwhile, the Ferris Wheel, a staple of Tivoli’s skyline, celebrates its 140th anniversary. Both attractions continue to offer timeless thrills to visitors, connecting them to the park’s rich history.
Culinary Delights at Tivoli Gardens
Tivoli Gardens is recognized as a culinary destination, earning acclaim from Condé Nast Traveler as “Copenhagen’s hottest food destination” in 2023. The park offers an impressive array of dining options, ranging from traditional Danish smørrebrød to innovative fine dining experiences.
A highlight of Tivoli’s culinary offerings is the newly reopened Færgekroen (Ferry Inn), now operated by the renowned Danish brewery Mikkeller. Visitors can enjoy classic Danish dishes such as schnitzel and breaded fillet of plaice, along with Mikkeller’s creative vegetarian options.
A Year of Dance and Cultural Performances
The 2024 season at Tivoli Gardens is a celebration of dance and the arts. From August 14 to 18, the world-renowned New York City Ballet will perform at the Tivoli Concert Hall, marking their return to Denmark after six years. This event is part of the ballet company’s 75th-anniversary celebration and promises to deliver an unforgettable experience for audiences.
The historic Pantomime Theatre, which is celebrating its 150th anniversary, will host nearly 300 performances this season. Among these is a new ballet based on Hans Christian Andersen’s “Clumsy Hans,” featuring costumes and sets designed by HM Queen Margrethe, choreography by Tobias Praetorius, and music by Phillip Faber. The ballet will run from June 22 to August 25 and is a highlight of the summer season.
A Musical Extravaganza for All
Music is an integral part of the Tivoli Gardens experience. Throughout the summer, visitors can enjoy a wide variety of concerts, from intimate jazz sessions to grand classical performances. The Friday Rock series will feature top international and Danish artists on the Open-Air Stage, with performances by legendary musicians such as Diana Ross and Chaka Khan.
Spectacular Fireworks and Special Events
Tivoli Gardens will light up the night sky with its signature fireworks displays every Saturday from June to September. The park also celebrates various special occasions, including Norway’s National Day (May 17), Iceland’s National Day (June 17), Bastille Day (July 14), and Tivoli Gardens’ own anniversary on August 15. Additionally, August 18 will feature Dog Day, the one day of the year when visitors can bring their dogs to the park.
