1 min read

On the evening of April 26, 2025, a devastating incident occurred at Vancouver Lapu-Lapu Day festival, a celebration honoring Filipino heritage. A 30-year-old man drove a black Audi SUV into the crowd at East 41st Avenue and Fraser Street around 8:14 p.m. PDT, resulting in the deaths of nine individuals, including a child, and injuring several others. The suspect, known to local authorities, was apprehended at the scene by bystanders and is currently in custody.

The motive behind the attack remains unclear, though terrorism has been ruled out. Authorities are investigating the suspect’s mental health as a potential factor.  In response to the tragedy, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney suspended his election campaign activities. The Philippine Consulate General in Vancouver expressed deep concern and extended sympathies to the victims.

The Lapu-Lapu Day festival, officially recognized in British Columbia since 2023, is a significant event for Vancouver’s Filipino community. The incident has cast a somber mood over the city, prompting discussions on public safety measures during large gatherings.

Despite the tragedy, Vancouver continues to host various events. The Vancouver Sun Run, Canada’s largest road race, is taking place today, April 27, featuring multiple race categories and drawing thousands of participants.  Additionally, the Art Vancouver fair at the Vancouver Convention Centre East concludes today, showcasing contemporary artworks from over 100 artists worldwide.

As the city navigates this difficult time, residents are encouraged to stay informed through local news outlets and to support community members affected by the recent events.
