President Donald Trump has filed a $10 billion defamation lawsuit against The Wall Street Journal, its parent companies Dow Jones and News Corp, and several top executives and journalists, in response to a report linking him to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Filed in federal court in Miami, the lawsuit targets a recent Wall Street Journal article that claimed Trump contributed a sexually suggestive letter and a nude drawing to a birthday album for Epstein in 2003. Trump denies ever writing or submitting such materials, calling the story “completely fabricated” and “maliciously defamatory.”
“This is a powerful, righteous lawsuit,” Trump said in a statement posted on Truth Social. “I never sent Epstein anything, and they know it. They made it up to hurt me, and now they’ll face the consequences.”
The suit names WSJ reporters Khadeeja Safdar and Joseph Palazzolo, as well as News Corp Executive Chairman Rupert Murdoch and CEO Robert Thomson. Trump’s legal team argues the article was published with “actual malice” and caused “enormous damage” to his reputation and business interests.
Dow Jones responded with a brief statement defending its journalism: “We stand by the accuracy and fairness of our reporting and will vigorously defend against this lawsuit.”
The timing of the lawsuit adds further complexity to Trump’s already high-profile legal and political calendar, as he continues to campaign for the 2026 midterms and eyes potential future office.
Legal experts say the case will hinge on whether Trump can prove the Journal knowingly published false information or acted with reckless disregard for the truth—a high bar in U.S. defamation law involving public figures.
If successful, the $10 billion claim would mark one of the largest defamation awards in American history.
