OpenAI President Greg Brockman Suggests Typing Is a Temporary Phase, Voice Interfaces Mark Computing’s Future

The shift in how humans interact with technology is accelerating, with a notable push towards voice-activated systems. Greg Brockman, president and co-founder of OpenAI, recently articulated a vision where traditional typing and clicking could become relics of a bygone era, describing these common interactions as a mere “phase.” His perspective suggests a future where computers adapt more closely to human communication, rather than the other way around.

This evolving landscape is already visible in corporate environments. Menlo Ventures, a San Francisco-based venture capital firm and an early investor in Anthropic, has reportedly outfitted four of its desks with microphones to facilitate dictation. Some investors within the firm are described as “voice-pilled,” a term emerging in the industry to characterize individuals fully committed to AI’s potential. These proponents believe that speaking allows for faster work and increased productivity compared to typing, suggesting a tangible benefit beyond mere convenience. The firm acknowledges that using voice technology in an open-plan office can sometimes feel awkward, a growing pain in the adoption of such interfaces.

One platform gaining traction in this space is Wispr Flow, which is currently employed by 450 of the Fortune 500 companies. The company behind Wispr Flow has seen its revenue grow by 150% quarter-over-quarter for the past year, according to Upstarts Media, and is establishing a new AI lab staffed with 50 researchers dedicated to developing advanced voice models and exploring novel interaction methods. Wispr Flow is specifically optimized for whispering, a feature designed to address the potential for disruption or privacy concerns in close-quarter office settings. This capability allows users to speak into a microphone in a low voice, even when discussing sensitive information just a foot away from a colleague.

OpenAI itself is making significant investments in voice technology, positioning it as a key differentiator against rivals such as Anthropic and Google Gemini. On July 23, the company integrated ChatGPT Voice into its ChatGPT desktop application, enabling professionals to verbally direct their AI agents. This development is anticipated to have a major impact on fields like software engineering, where coding by speaking could become a viable method. Brockman emphasized this point at a media roundtable coinciding with the ChatGPT Voice launch, stating his belief that voice will become the interface of the future, bringing the computer closer to the user. He posited that the current reliance on clicking and typing is not an inherent human preference and will likely diminish in a few years.

While the concept of a voice-centric future holds promise, some practical challenges remain. The effectiveness of voice interfaces for tasks requiring in-depth editing, code reviews, extensive research, or detailed AI prompting is still a subject of discussion. For many, the ability to meticulously list details and systematically think through problems often feels more natural and efficient through written communication. Despite these considerations, OpenAI is reportedly developing a consumer hardware device, potentially with a voice component, intended for home use. The success of such a device in competing with established products like Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and Apple HomePod will largely depend on the sophistication and accuracy of its underlying voice models, aiming to avoid the common frustrations associated with current voice assistants.

Beyond interface innovation, the broader AI landscape continues to evolve rapidly. Alibaba recently unveiled its largest AI model to date, while DeepSeek introduced a new model claiming to be significantly more cost-effective than Anthropic’s Fable 5, highlighting the intense competition and rapid development within the Chinese tech sector. Meanwhile, concerns over the cyber capabilities of advanced AI models like Anthropic’s Mythos are growing, particularly in international relations, with reports indicating China’s anxiety ahead of potential summits. These discussions underscore the multifaceted impact of AI, extending from daily human-computer interactions to geopolitical considerations.
