President Trump announced that what he called “massive” exploration for oil, gas and minerals is set to begin in Greenland, posting the news on Truth Social shortly after finalizing a new security agreement with Denmark and Greenland’s government.

The security deal expands the US military’s role on the island, clearing the way for two new American bases and the planned “Golden Dome” missile defense system, while formally reaffirming Danish sovereignty over Greenland and Greenlanders’ right to self-determination.

Trump said experts believe Greenland’s oil reserves rival almost any deposit on Earth, describing the amount of easily accessible oil as far greater than in nearly any other location worldwide, though he did not provide a timeline or specifics on how the exploration effort would actually proceed.

Greenland's deputy mining minister pushed back on the scale of the announcement, saying the island remains "very far away from 'massive' exploration," and noting that smaller exploration projects already underway could take years before becoming operational. Rare earth minerals in the region are often locked within hard rock formations, while offshore oil and gas deposits sit beneath Arctic ice, making extraction both expensive and labor-intensive under current conditions.

The announcement is the latest chapter in Trump's long-running interest in Greenland's strategic and resource value, and while the new security arrangement marks a concrete expansion of the US military presence on the island, the timeline and feasibility of large-scale resource extraction remain considerably less certain than the president's framing suggested.
