This event, to be held at the Great Hall of the University at Max-Reinhard-Platz, starting at 11:30 AM, will be ceremonially opened by the President of the State Parliament, Dr. Brigitta Pallauf. The Academy celebrates this ceremony annually to welcome and officially induct new members. A highlight of this year is the awarding of the Paul Crutzen Medal, initiated by the European Academy of Sciences and Arts and its honorary president Felix Unger, to Prof. Dr. Emmanuelle Charpentier, a member of the Academy’s Class IV and the 2020 Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry. The founder and owner of VTA Austria GmbH Group, Ing. Mag.Dr.h.c. Ulrich Kubinger, sponsors the Paul Crutzen Medal and will personally present it to Prof. Charpentier. She will also deliver the keynote speech on the transformative power of microbiology in life sciences, particularly through gene editing with CRISPR.
Other events during the 2024 Festive Plenary Days include the Salzburg Tolerance Talks on April 5th, focusing on dialogue and featuring a round-table discussion titled “Universal Fraternity and Social Friendship”. The Workshop on STEMAC, scheduled for April 5th at the Catholic-Theological Faculty of the University of Salzburg, will address the integration of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics with art and culture, under the leadership of Class VI Dean, Prof. Dr. Ioannis Liritzis.
The European Academy of Sciences and Arts, with approximately 2000 members, including 37 Nobel laureates, is a knowledge network that addresses significant ethical and scientific challenges in a increasingly fragmented society. Founded on March 7, 1990, by Felix Unger, Cardinal Franz König, and philosopher Nikolaus Lobkowicz, the Academy focuses on future European issues such as digitalization, artificial intelligence, energy, environment, and fostering tolerance in an increasingly tumultuous world.
