Rafael Devers Traded to San Francisco Giants in Blockbuster Deal

1 min read

Rafael Devers, the longtime Boston Red Sox star, has officially been traded to the San Francisco Giants in a major mid-season move. The trade, completed on June 15, 2025, marks a significant turning point for both franchises. Devers, a powerful hitter and central figure in Boston’s lineup for years, was dealt in exchange for pitchers Jordan Hicks and Kyle Harrison, outfielder James Tibbs, and minor-league arm Jose Bello. The Giants also took on Devers’s full contract, valued at over $313 million through 2033.

Tensions reportedly grew in Boston after the team asked Devers to shift positions following the signing of Alex Bregman. Devers declined further positional changes, which contributed to Boston’s decision to trade him.

In addition to the internal team dynamics, Devers had been dealing with a nagging shoulder issue that limited his time at third base and often placed him in the designated hitter role. Despite this, he remained productive, even delivering a dramatic walk-off homer just days before the trade.

Now with the Giants, Devers is expected to strengthen the team’s offensive push as they aim for a playoff run. His shoulder concerns are being managed, and he is anticipated to split time between third base and designated hitter duties in San Francisco. This trade not only reshapes the Giants’ roster but also signals a new chapter in Devers’s career—leaving behind the only MLB team he had ever known.
