North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has pledged his country’s “full support” for Russia during talks with President Vladimir Putin in Beijing, signaling closer military and political cooperation between the two states.
Meeting on the sidelines of a military parade marking the 80th anniversary of Japan’s surrender in World War II, Kim described backing Russia’s war effort as a “fraternal duty” under the mutual defense treaty the two nations signed last year.
Putin welcomed Kim’s remarks, praising North Korean soldiers fighting alongside Russian forces in Ukraine and calling the relationship one of “trust, friendship, and alliance.”
According to South Korean intelligence, around 1,000 North Korean troops are currently deployed with Russian units, with as many as 6,000 more preparing for combat. Officials in Seoul estimate that roughly 2,000 North Korean soldiers have already been killed in the conflict.
The two leaders reaffirmed commitments under their 2024 Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty, which obliges both sides to provide military assistance if either is attacked. The agreement has deepened fears in Washington, Seoul, and Tokyo that Pyongyang and Moscow are cementing a long-term security alliance.
The Beijing gathering — which also featured Chinese President Xi Jinping — was widely seen as a symbolic display of alignment among the three powers, presenting a united front against U.S.-led alliances in Asia and Europe.
Kim and Putin also discussed expanding cooperation in trade, energy, and technology, underscoring their shared interest in countering Western sanctions and isolations.
