She was scheduled to fly to Thailand on March 11 but never boarded her flight. For ten days, she was missing—until March 19, when she was discovered near a road in Dubai with multiple broken bones, including fractures in her spine, arms, and legs.
She was unrecognizable and unable to speak due to the severity of her injuries. Maria underwent emergency surgeries and remains hospitalized in Dubai. Her family and close friends have since flown in to support her recovery.
Official vs. Family Accounts
Dubai Police released a statement saying that Maria fell from a restricted construction site. However, her family and lawyer strongly question this version of events. Her mother, sister, and a family lawyer argue that the extent and nature of her injuries are inconsistent with a simple fall.
Instead, they suggest that Maria may have been the victim of abuse—possibly related to organized criminal activity, or worse, human trafficking.
Ukrainian law enforcement has since opened a formal investigation into the possibility that Maria was trafficked or assaulted during her time in Dubai. The absence of surveillance footage and the silence from potential witnesses have only deepened the mystery.
