173 shoemakers such as Nike and Adidas issued an open letter on Monday (20th) urging President Donald Trump to immediately stop paying customs duties on shoes made in China, pointing to taxation that would bring US consumers Catastrophic impact.

According to the open letter, Washington has imposed a 25% tariff on imported Chinese goods, which has brought disaster to American consumers, enterprises and even the US economy. They asked Trump to immediately stop paying customs duties on shoes made in China. “The taxation will cause shoe manufacturers to face an additional $7 billion (about HK$54.6 billion) in tariffs each year, which will increase the cost of imported shoes and will definitely have a direct impact on consumers.”

The open letter has been uploaded to the industry’s Footwear Distributors and Retailers of America (FDRA) website and sent to Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, and Commerce Secretary Rose (Wilbur Ross) and White House chief economic adviser Larry Kudlow.

The United States has imposed a 25% tariff on 200 billion Chinese goods since May, involving goods including clothing, sports shoes, toys, furniture and electronic products.
