Former NFL Hall of Famer John Elway was involved in a tragic golf cart accident on Saturday evening, April 26, 2025, at The Madison Club in La Quinta, California. Elway’s longtime friend, agent, and business partner, Jeff Sperbeck, fell from the back of the moving golf cart and suffered a fatal head injury. Sperbeck, 62, was transported to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, where he was placed on life support. He was pronounced dead on Wednesday, April 30. ​

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that an investigation is underway, though no charges have been filed at this time. Elway reportedly made the initial 911 call following the incident. The investigation aims to determine if any criminal activity occurred. ​

Sperbeck had been Elway’s agent since 1990 and co-founded the 7Cellars winery in Napa Valley. Over his career, he represented more than 100 NFL players, including Hall of Famers Ronnie Lott and Jim Plunkett. Elway, a two-time Super Bowl champion with the Denver Broncos, concluded his executive role with the team in 2023.

Elway expressed his devastation over the loss of his longtime friend and business partner, stating he was “absolutely devastated and heartbroken.” Sperbeck’s wife, Cori, also released a statement, expressing gratitude for the outpouring of support and love during this difficult time. ​
