A Trailblazing Career
Born in Denver in 1959, Sobule’s music career spanned over three decades, during which she released 12 albums. Her breakout single, “I Kissed a Girl,” made history as one of the first openly gay-themed songs to reach the Billboard Top 20, marking a significant moment in LGBTQ+ representation in pop music . She also gained recognition for “Supermodel,” featured in the 1995 film Clueless, and contributed to the Nickelodeon series Unfabulous.
Sobule’s work often delved into personal and societal themes, addressing topics like anorexia, depression, and identity. In a 2002 interview with The New York Times, she publicly came out as bisexual, further cementing her role as a voice for the LGBTQ+ community.
Recent Projects and Legacy
At the time of her passing, Sobule was actively touring and promoting her autobiographical musical, Fck 7th Grade*, which had been nominated for a Drama Desk Award. A cast recording of the musical is scheduled for release on June 6, 2025 . Additionally, a 30th-anniversary reissue of her self-titled 1995 album is set to be released on the same day.
Sobule was also known for her innovative approach to music production, notably funding her 2009 album California Years through fan donations, raising $75,000.

Sobule was scheduled to perform in Denver at the Tuft Theater on May 2, 2025. In light of her passing, the concert has been canceled and replaced with a community gathering to honor her memory . She is survived by her brother James, sister-in-law Mary Ellen, and three nephews.
Her manager, John Porter, and attorney, Ken Hertz, highlighted her vibrant presence and meaningful personal connections, stating, “She was a cherished member of various communities who left a lasting impact through her music and activism”.
